An energy cooperative is much more than an organisational form – it is a way to build local independence, integrate communities and create a future based on renewable energy sources. It is an answer to the question, “What can we do together to make energy cheaper, cleaner and more accessible?”

What is an energy cooperative?

It is a form of cooperation between residents, entrepreneurs, local authorities and farmers to jointly produce and use energy from renewable sources (e.g. sun, wind, biogas). It is not about profit, but about self-sufficiency – energy and socially.

Legal definition

An energy cooperative, according to Article 2(33a) of the RES Act (Ustawa o OZE) , is an entity that:

  • produces energy from renewable sources (electricity, heat or cooling),
  • allocates it to the needs of the members of the cooperative,
  • can store energy,
  • operates in one or two neighbouring municipalities.

An example from practice

In the municipality of Słomniki, residents and local authorities have installed PV installations on the roofs of schools and the office, laying the foundations for a future cooperative. Savings are up to 30% and the energy supplies local needs - from street lighting to kindergartens.

What can a cooperative do?

What will members gain?

Social benefits – or relationship energy

Energy cooperatives strengthen local identity, integrate people around a common goal and build trust. They are a great tool for social activation – especially in rural areas and smaller towns.

Why is it worth it?

  • energy becomes local, clean and cheap,
  • the community gains new competence and control
  • new jobs and investments are created,
  • profits stay in the region.

An energy cooperative is a practical way to take energy matters into your own hands. It doesn’t require a huge investment – all it takes is a group of committed people and a shared vision. It is the first step towards independence, savings and sustainability. It is also an opportunity to build local pride – because together we can do more.
